How did you decide on getting your tattoo?

Resolved Question

How did you decide on getting your tattoo?

Basically I'm just wanting a little incite to how you finally choose your tattoo/s
What inspired you?
What's the meaning? how you came up with the meaning? or what does it mean?

Anything :)

I really want to get a tattoo done, something with meaning but i don't think i have anything really, nothing that inspires me either :/
I'm hoping a few answers will help me out.

Well you need to make it personal. You need to be informed. You need to to do your homework.

Here's a great site page that covers what you need to know and do before getting a tattoo:

Here's an article on how to get a great tattoo without regret:

Don't be in a hurry, look at tattoo history throughout time and around the world:

Look at what others have done:

Then pretend that you have never seen a tattoo, but decided to have some art on your body, what would you do? what style? theme? etc.

Then find an experienced and skilled tattoo artist. Know the difference between bad tattoos:

and high quality body art:

My tattoos are about my life, my loves, my interests, who I am, etc.
I have an extensive wrist bracelet totally custom, very complicated, that began from a dream. It started when I dreamed that I had a blue orb on my wrist, and then grew from there with personal stuff, and ended with flowers for beauty.
My others are custom also, something for my son etc.

luck~

  • I'm currently working on one on my side, it's a tribute to Alan Turing.

He was a computer genius, he de-coded the enigma machine, helped us win the second world war.
He worked on a lot of computer idea's, and he was incredibly intelligent and well ahead of his time.

He was burgled after the end of the war, unfortunatly his boyfriend was there.
    The police arrested him.
He was given female hormones to 'treat' his homosexuality, which made him grow female breasts.
He was then given more hormones, and more drugs to cure that.

    He comitted suicide.

England murdered a genius who saved millions of lives, because most of the people then thought there was something wrong with him.
He saved our country, and we humiliated him so much he killed himself.

I think his story says a lot about how people can treat each other, especially when different.
  • I choose to get my tattoos based on things that happened in my life. You wouldn't be able to tell the story of them by what is inked on my body but if you would see them and ask, I would tell you the story. My tattoo signify my strength of getting through tough things in my life. If you don't have a meaning then I would honestly suggest not getting a tattoo. You're less likely to regret a tattoo if it has meaning to you. Some people feel differently. Some people like to collect the art on their body. I like mine to have meaning. Good luck and happy tattooing :D
  • It took a while, a couple of months before i got my clan crest on my arm. I just searched online for pictures, carvings, metalwork, art for my clan crest, editing the best bits of a couple of designs together and eventually coming up with my final design, think about what is important to you (family, friends, hobbies, particular phrases or beliefs you hold), find as many designs as you can and choose what is right for you.
  • When you see something you like you will just know...I have a large design on my thigh made up of four different tattoos, which I had put together. My latest on my back is a heartagram with butterfly wings and my wedding date. It is totally different to anything I have ever seen and just researched basically for a design to go with my wedding date.
  • I woke up and thought, 'I want a tattoo!' Simple. I don't understand you American's that have to have a near death experience or a death of a family member to have a tattoo? If you like tattoos just have one!!!

    Favorites films
    Favorite music
    Favorite country
    etc...

All could be used for ideas for a tattoo.
  • I've got an ankh. I've always liked what it stands for, so when I found the design I wanted and still wanted it after 4/5 years. I went ahead.

It symbolises life, love and reincarnation, and is often used as an amulet.

My 2nd one (still in planning stages) is going to be a quote, but one used by my parents when they used to write letters to each other.

  • Well I have 1 with flowers, which i LOVE! But if you don´t like flowers then you shouldn´t. I also have a chinese sign for love. And a cartoon cat lol. Just go to a shop and watch in the books there. You can get a lot of inspiration there!
  • I have five tattoos. One of them is an anchor with a heart on the top of it. My best friend has the same one. One of them is my zodiac inside of a star. The other three I just thought were cool and have no meaning.
  • Some people get tattoos for meaning, some people get tattoos because they love the art....me personally, I get tattoos of things I've absolutely loved throughout my whole life. Examples: The Legend of Zelda video games? I've played those since I was really young, my most favorite video game ever. And it just keeps getting better. So, I got a tat of Link w/ Epona, etc. Another example is Gir from the Invader Zim show (not even aired anymore). He was the most awesomely adorable thing ever. Loved him ever since I first saw the show, again many many years ago. So I got him :)

The best thing I can honestly recommend is to never go get a tattoo "on a whim" wait a few weeks or a few months if you can and if you still want it sometime down the road, then you'll know you'll like it for life :)

  • I had known for about three years that i wanted to get a fairy tattoo. I had decided on placement, color, and the overall style of the fairy, but i couldn't find a suitable picture to take in, and don't trust drawling one on my own because even though i can draw well, sometimes i'll look at a drawing i did that i once liked, and later think i did a crappy job, so obviously i wouldn't want to tattoo one.
My best friend had told me that for my 18th birthday she would pay for my tattoo, since she knew i've been wanting it for so long and i would finally be able to get it. but when the day came, she just couldn't afford it, and i hadn't decided on the exact fairy yet, so instead she bought me a pack of temporary tattoos. all fairies, and apologized for not being able to get me a real one.
Turns out in those tattoos, one of them was the exact perfect one! and after making a few alterations i eventually got it done as my own:)
I've always liked fairies, and i know their pretty common so alot of people might not think of them as meaningful, to me it symbolizes freedom, unknown, innocence and mischief all in one. and it will always be a reminder of my best friend, since in the end she helped me pick it out without even meaning to.
