Why are we not all the same skin colour?

Resolved Question

Why are we not all the same skin colour?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker

Dark skinned people have the ability to make Vitamin D from the sunlight. This is partly down to diet also. In Africa people there could not get Vitamin D from what they were eating. Traditionally darker people are from hotter countries.

Hotter countries produce darker skinned people, it's natural selection.

Varying temperatures and if Vitamin D is available in the diet, depends on the darkness of your skin too.

The way a person looks is affected by weather. People in hot and cold countries tend to have wider nostrils to help retain moisture. Epicanthic folds above the eyes help regulate temperature, the thicker they are the colder the place they live sort of.

  • Because of different climates and evolution.
In hot countries where the skin is exposed to the sun, being darker protects the skin from skin cancer and heat exhaustion. In colder climates with little sun exposure lighter skin allows as much sun in as possible for vitamin d which helps absorb calcium.
This of course happend very slowly over many many years.
Some children with dark skin growing up in colder climates where the sun is hidden by cloud can develop rickets, which is caused by a lack of vitamin d to absorb the calcium for proper bone development. If this was in a time where you had to fight to survive, this would be no good and slowly the genes in that population for dark skin would die out.
Genes for lighter skin in hotter countries would die out if it was a hindrance to survival e.g needing to be in the shade for longer period of time, not being able to look for food for long enough.

Over time the population will have similar characteristics which is a race, until they reproduce with other races.
Every shade of skin colour is the result of perfect natural engineering.
  • thanks to the other people who answered this. i used to wonder about this for ages, if you go by the god creation theory then adam & eve were the first and only people purposely created and they were the same colour. i guess the sun is to thank for variety :P
  • All of us don't have the same genes, do we?
You might as well be asking why we don't all have the same eye or hair color.
  • The sun
  • that would be just boring
