Tattoo aftercare help?

Resolved Question

Tattoo aftercare help?

I've just had a colour tattoo on my hip, i'm using germolene but am not sure what is meant to be happening, is my colour meant to be coming out at first and rubbing against the tissue I hold to it? Any help would be great

I had a tattoo done many years ago and was not advised correctly on how to look after it - I used creams like you, and was told to rub them in to keep it moist and clean. It didn't work and a small part became infected and it took a long long time to grow out.
I then went to have the same tattoo re-done with a more professional studio - and this time she covered it in a thick layer of nappy cream, then put some clingfilm on it, then a plaster around the edge of the clingfilm - this formed a bubble of nappy cream over the tattoo and it therefore kept it moist and protected. I kept it there for 5 days - changing the 'dressing' twice a day. It was well worth it - I had absolutely no problem with it (it initially bled) and it looked, and still does look absolutely fantastic.

So - keep it covered in nappy cream - a thick layer of the stuff - ideally contained in something like clingfilm - it works !

Hope this helps

  • I'd go for Bepanthen.

Germoline is a bit funny. Its an antibac cream, and its got aenesthetic in, as well as all sorts of other stuff. I don't know how it would react to a tattoo, but I'd go for better safe than sorry...

And yes, ink will come off for a while, its just excess. As long as there are no empty patches on your tattoo where there shouldn't be, it will be fine.

And avoid the tissue. they saturate and fall apart too easily. Ideally you want your tattoo to get all the fresh air it can, and be uncovered. But that just isn't possible when you have to wear clothes that are goign to rub.
Go for a medical bandage thing. Breathable, cotton ones are good. And change them often.
  • That's normal as can be. I usually heal mine up dry, as do all the other tattoo artists I know. They look like hell while they're healing up, but they come out great that way. The only time I use anything on them is when they're itching so bad, I'm about to lose my mind. Then, a little dab of Elma takes the itch away. Good stuff.

  • It will bleed for a bit! Germolines good, try using 'Tattoo Goo'. You can buy it from tattoo places. Its in a little pot like Vaseline. Also, Vaseline can make the colour of your tatt stand out :)
  • The colour does do that to start with.
I use savlon instead of germolene, but any kind of product like that is fine.
Don't pick it when it scabs!
  • STOP!!! don't use creams on it, it will ruin the tattoo.
  • Whats hapening is normal.
keep the site clean and it'll be fine
